I recently saw a one and a half year child for their first pediatric dental visit and their visit went about as well as I could have asked. There were no tears and after a full cleaning, we had a happy, curious kid whose only concern was the flavor of the delicious marshmallow flavored toothpaste we used and how he could get more.
As much as I'd like to pat myself on the back for a job well done, I'd like to give a shout out to the dad that was the real hero of the appointment (shout out to Graham's father, if you're reading this). He spent the last few nights reading bed time kids dental books in anticipation for his son's first pediatric dental visit. Reading to your kids is one of the best things you can do to prepare them for a visit. It sounds silly, but it helps reduce anxiety and creates a comfortable environment for your children where they don't need to be afraid because they know what's coming next.

This is a pop-up book that helps show brushing and flossing in a friendly, fun way with animals. If you're having trouble getting your kids let you brush their teeth, we enjoy this book.
This book is one of the more detailed books and is great for reading, especially for kids that have a lot of questions.
A lot of kids dental books cover fillings, loose teeth, or procedures that might be a bit frightening for a toddler. This book helps explain a dental visit, step by step and is often a great first book to get.
Who doesn't love Dr. Seuss? A classic.
This isn't only one of our favorite kids dentist books, it's one of our favorite kids books in general. It's written by the author of Shrek and puts a fun, whimsical spin on a dental appointment. This one is best for kids who are a little older but is truly entertaining for both you and them.
