Don't Kids Have Another Set of Teeth? The Importance of Baby Teeth

By: Dr. Peter Markov, Owner and Kids Dentist at VK Pediatric Dentistry in Arlington, VA

Baby teeth are very important for your children's' health and development. They help children chew, speak and smile. They are very important for functional development and a happy and healthy life!

Here are some reasons baby teeth are very important:

#1: They act as space holders for permanent teeth

Your child’s baby teeth will hold space for their permanent teeth and guide them into the proper position. Permanent teeth begin to erupt between the ages of 6 and 7. If baby teeth are lost early, the teeth can drift, creating a lack of space for those adult teeth to come in. Although this can be corrected or prevented with a trip to your pediatric dentist and the possible use of a space maintainer, baby teeth are nature's best space maintainer for those adult teeth!

#2: They are key in maintaining good nutrition

If your child’s baby teeth are properly taken care of, they should be able to eat without any pain or discomfort. Pain and discomfort are often caused by cavities which might lead to bad eating habits. If you a child has pain and/or discomfort coming from the teeth, it usually means the cavity has progressed and is very large. Regular visits for 6 month check ups can help prevent problems before they occur!

VK Pediatric Dentistry believes that healthy baby teeth also help your child feel good about him or herself. A healthy, beautiful smile boosts their self-image and confidence, and gives your child a chance to smile with confidence. Schedule your child’s first dental visit at VK Pediatric Dentistry by their 1st birthday or within 6 months of their first tooth.
