Sometimes kids need a little extra help when it comes to their oral health. Most children don't think brushing their teeth is fun, but there are plenty of good apps out there to make oral hygiene interactive and help the time fly. Although sometimes we think kids get a little too much screen time, spending a few extra minutes with one of these applications may help your child look forward to brushing and flossing their teeth! Dr. Peter, our favorite Arlington Pediatric Dentist, downloaded and tested dental apps from iTunes and here were our favorites:
Disney Magic Timer - Compatible with P&G Oral Care products such as Crest or Oral-B Pro-Health Stages that feature Disney, Marvel or Star Wars characters, Kids’ Crest Fairies and Kids’ Crest Minnie Mouse products. You don’t have to have a Disney or Marvel product to use the app, but if you do, scanning one of these toothbrushes unlocks different characters. A video clip plays before the timer starts then the virtual brush brushes away to reveal a screenshot of the movie while your child brushes for two minutes. Kids can earn virtual stickers for brushing successfully. It keeps track of your kid’s progress in a report card. Link.
Toothsavers - A brushing timer and game in one. Your child helps Toothy and the Toothsavers save the fairy tale kingdom by brushing for two minutes to brush away the evil spell! Brush twice a day and it unlocks rewards including Brush With Toothsaver, Play With Toothsaver or Have Fun With Your Friend. Link.
Chomper Chums - Designed to teach proper oral hygiene techniques and to help kids make healthy food and drink choices. Choose a Chomper Chum to brush, floss and rinse with your child. Earn coins and Super Smile Award points each time your child completes an activity. Use the coins to buy food and drink for your Chomper Chum. Link.
Brush Up: ToothBrush - The toothbrush training game. Your child can watch themselves brush using your device’s camera while a virtual character models the correct way to brush. Earn prizes and track progress. Link.
Brush DJ - If your child likes music, use this app to play a song from your device while your child brushes. The app can sync with your media library has free music already installed. It also uses Apple music to give you a wider song choice for use in the app. The app allows you to set reminders like when to replace your toothbrush or when it's time to schedule an appointment with the dentist.
